Senate directs ECP to change election schedule immediately
The Senate Secretariat directed the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs to take immediate action and submit a report within two months.
Islamabad: The Senate Secretariat issued a notification of approval of the resolution regarding the postponement of general election in Pakistan.
A copy of the approval of resolution passed by the Upper House of Pakistan has been sent to the President Dr. Arif Alvi, Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), Ministry of Law and Justice and other relevant departments.
The Senate Secretariat directed the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs to take immediate action and submit a report within two months and asked the Election Commission to change the election schedule immediately in view of the country's situation.
It is pertinent to note that yesterday the upper house (Senate) passed the resolution to postpone the general elections to be held on February 8 in the country by majority vote.
In the meeting chaired by Chairman Senate Sadiq Sanjrani, 14 members were present in the House at the time of approval of the resolution. Independent Senator Dilawar Khan from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa presented the resolution to postpone the election, Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) members and a member from FATA Hidayatullah supported the resolution.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Senator Gurdeep Singh and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Member Bahramand Tangi remained silent while Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Senator Afnanullah opposed the resolution.
