UN Chief distressed by Gaza siege, calls for urgent humanitarian aid Access
Antonio Guterres says he has just concluded an extraordinary meeting of senior UN leaders to discuss the unprecedented developments in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

New York: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed deep distress over the complete siege of the Gaza Strip by Israel, emphasizing the urgent need for humanitarian aid and access for humanitarian personnel.
Guterres revealed, "I have just concluded an extraordinary meeting of senior UN leaders to discuss the unprecedented developments in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory." He condemned the attacks by Hamas and others on Israeli towns and villages in the Gaza periphery, which have resulted in more than 800 Israelis losing their lives and over 2,500 sustaining injuries.
The Secretary-General stressed the critical requirement for medical equipment, food, fuel, and other humanitarian supplies to be urgently delivered to Gaza, along with facilitating the entry of essential relief items. The UN remains committed to providing assistance to address these pressing needs.
Antonio Guterres urged all parties and relevant stakeholders to grant the United Nations access to deliver vital humanitarian aid to Palestinian civilians who are trapped and in need of assistance in the Gaza Strip. He also called upon the international community to swiftly mobilize humanitarian support for this endeavor.
In his plea, Guterres emphasized the need to break the cycle of violence, hatred, and polarization. He underscored the importance of realizing Israel's legitimate security needs and providing Palestinians with a clear path toward the establishment of their own state.
The conflict between Israeli forces and Hamas escalated significantly, resulting in a high number of casualties on both sides. The surprise attack on Israel prompted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to declare the beginning of a challenging and lengthy war. Hamas launched a massive rocket barrage and mounted ground, air, and sea offensives, leading to intense fighting.
The situation involved gun battles between Israeli forces and numerous Hamas fighters in various Israeli locations. Netanyahu emphasized that Israel was determined to restore security to its citizens and achieve its objectives, vowing to continue the offensive phase without limitations or respite.
