International Men's Day (IMD) is being observed today (Friday) to spread awareness about men's well-being and cherish their achievements and contribution in society.

Every year, the day is celebrated on November 19. This year’s theme is “Better relations between men and women”.

There are six pillars of international men’s day, and one of them focuses on improving gender relations and promoting gender equality between men and women alike.

Int’l Men’s day has been celebrated since 1999 after Dr Jerome Teelucksingh established the day in honour of his father’s birthday

He encourages people to use this day to convey issues that affect men.

According to WHO’s data, suicide is the leading cause of death among men under the age of 45.

This is accurate in many countries, including the United Kingdom, The United States, Australia, Russia etc.

Gender identity, societal and cultural conditioning, and role models all play a role.

The aim of this day is to celebrate positive male role models and to raise awareness of men’s issues, including topics such as mental health, toxic masculinity and the prevalence of male suicides.

This is also the day when discrimination faced by them are spoken about and better gender relations are promised to be created.

Moreover, this day is celebrated all over the world by organising programmes and conferences where issues related to men and boys are talked about, problems are discussed and awareness is created.
