Pakistan's ranking on the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) by Transparency International, has slipped by 16 notches to 140th.


Islamabad: Pakistan ranked 140 out of 180 countries — dropping 16 spots over last year — in the newly released Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) by Transparency International (TI), an annual index that ranks countries based on perceptions of public sector corruption.

Country’s score shows that corruption has increased in Pakistan as compared to the last year. In 2020, Pakistan ranked 124th on the global corruption list.
According to Corruption Perception Index (CPI 2021), corruption has increased in Pakistan. Pakistan ranks 140 out of 180 countries.

As per the anti-graft watchdog, Denmark and New Zealand topped the index this year, with 88 points each. With a score of 67, the United States (US) ranks 27 on the list — behind Hong Kong, Uruguay, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Syria, Somalia and South Sudan remain at the bottom of the chart with 14, 12 and 12 points, respectively.
For the first time, this year's index offered a "comprehensive look at a decade of corruption, revealing which countries have improved, regressed or stagnated over the last 10 years", Transparency International said in a statement.
The crucial report noted that corruption levels remain at a standstill worldwide, with 86% of countries making little to no progress in a decade.
Moreover, TI also drew links between COVID-19 and corruption, noting that Asian governments responded to the pandemic by rolling out some of the world's biggest economic recovery plans.
