According to a media report, the trial run of the firewall has slowed down social media in the country and informed officials aware of the situation said that this is the reason why fear has arisen regarding the future of Internet-based businesses in the country.
Officials said that after the end of the trial, the internet traffic and speed will return to normal. The government has allocated more than 30 billion rupees in the development budget to acquire and install this filtering system.
An official stated that the progress on the firewall has been underway since January 2024, including the procurement and installation of the system. The system has now been installed and is being commissioned and it will take a few weeks to hand over the control of the system to the concerned authorities.
Another official added that while the system is meant to control social media influencers who are involved in spreading fake news, the firewall is meant to hide or block the content of those influencers.
