The study, which spanned five years and included 2,600 participants across North America, Europe, Middle East, Asia and Africa, was printed in the journal Nutrients.
The study also found out that distress rates increased in young women in spring while increased intake of fast food and high-caffeine led to negative mental health associations.
Engaging in frequent exercise was found to have beneficial effects on mental health.
Women living in Asia reported higher mental stress than their western counterparts.
In young men, positive mental health associations had links to moderate-to-high meat and dairy intake.
