Nisar Khuhro elected on Senate’s vacant seat of Faisal Vawda
PTI and its allies at the Centre had announced to boycott the election
Karachi: Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) leader Nisar Khuhro on Wednesday elected senator on a seat from Sindh that fell vacant after the disqualification of PTI leader Faisal Vawda.
According to unofficial results, the polling was held in the Sindh Assembly building and continued until 4 pm without any break.
Though the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) Agha Arsalan had filed nomination papers for the seat, the PTI and its allies at the Centre had announced to boycott the election. Despite the boycott, two PTI MPAs voted for PPP candidate Nisar Khuhro.
On Tuesday, PTI’s Sindh president and Maritime Affairs Minister Ali Zaidi tweeted, “The PTI-led opposition will boycott tomorrow’s [March 9] Senate election in Sindh Assembly on seat vacated due to Faisal Vawda’s disqualification.
Earlier, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) disqualified Faisal Vawda for life under Article 62(1) (f) of the Constitution. The election governing body declared Faisal Vawda ineligible for holding the seat of a senator.
A three-member bench—headed by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja announced the reserved verdict today.
ECP said that the PTI leader had submitted a fake undertaking to the electoral body during the 2018 general elections—lying regarding his dual citizenship.
The ECP court has directed Vawda to return within two months along all the salaries and privileges he received from the government during his term as member of the National Assembly (MNA).
A three-member ECP bench had reserved the verdict in December 2021 on applications seeking disqualification of Vawda over allegedly concealing information about his dual nationality.
The judgement came amid Pakistan’s high temperature in politics—with opposition parties gearing up for a decisive movement against PTI, both inside and outside parliament.
As per political experts, the verdict definitely have an impact on the country’s future political scenario.
