Govt once again gear up to provide low-cost power to industries

Islamabad: The caretaker government has once again been active in providing low-cost electricity to the export sector.

According to the media reports, the Ministry of Energy has prepared a plan to provide electricity to the export sector at 09 cents per unit. If the plan is approved, the electricity for the export sector will be reduced from 14 cents to 09 cents per unit under which the burden of cross-subsidy on the export sector will be removed.

It is also reported that the government of Pakistan has sent the plan of low-cost electricity for the export sector to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). At the time the domestic consumers are being provided cheap electricity by giving electricity at the rate of 14 cents per unit to the industrial sector.

Notably, last year, the IMF has once rejected the proposal to provide electricity to the export sector at 09 cents, after which the facility of cheap electricity for the export industries was withdrawn due to the pressure of the IMF.
